By that time, Oklahoma County District Attorney Curtis Harris, a devout Baptist, had begun a moral crusade against vice and crime. Most importantly, gay bars a key socialization center in cities nationwide didnt begin to flourish in OKC until the 1960s, after the statewide repeal of Prohibition in 1959. For the most part, however, all things homosexual were driven far underground, forcing gay men to engage in mostly anonymous sex in downtown hotels, bathrooms and local parks. If a gay and lesbian community existed in OKC prior to the 1980s, it is difficult to find evidence of its existence.Ĭertainly, people engaged in same-sex behavior in OKC since the beginning of statehood, as evidenced by local arrest records for sodomy in the 1920s and 1930s. In January 1985, writer Keith Smith told his story in The Gayly Oklahoman, introducing the ninth victim of AIDS in the state to Oklahoma Citys gay and lesbian community. The nursing homes parent company, meanwhile, forced the facility to use an array of exaggerated safeguards in dealing with him. Only one of the 50 nursing homes that health officials contacted on his behalf agreed to accept him. They have remodeled classic homes, opened business, and kept the economy going in that area of town.īesides Eureka Springs, I would think Tulsa would be a great choice!!! Look at the job opportunities there too.A local, non-emergency transport service refused to take the 17-year-old Oklahoman to his hospital visits, insisting that medical officials first explain precisely how AIDS moved from person to person.Īfter each hospital trip, they sterilized their van from top to bottom medical technicians wore hazardous material suits to avoid touching him and used a telephone to turn the pages in his chart.įollowing a brief stay at Oklahoma Memorial Hospital, his parents refused to and were unable to care for him. I think because the people of Tulsa see how productive the gay community has been in revitalizing the Utica, Cherry Street and Mid-Town areas. I never observed any problems and only saw respect for gay people there. Very friendly with a bit of sophistocation. I think this is true of all the people who are attracted to the Utica Area.

I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue with the nicest gay men! They were the best guys in the world. There is also a beautiful park in that area called Woodward Park.gorgeous gardens!! Many great companies in the area too. There are nice restaurants and a lot of unique shops. I know there is high gay population in that area. Utica, which is near downtown, is a beautiful area of Tulsa with many older homes. I lived many years in Tulsa and worked in the Utica Square area. So.if you were to move here, I'd pick Tulsa or Norman Tulsa has more drag shows (eek, and don't bother with the Wreck Room unless you're a teenager with nothing better to do.), more cultural type events and what not. Norman has a decent gay population, and it is fairly common to see gay couples roaming around campus, or in museums, at bars, etc. For people who need more variety, sometimes they drive to Dallas - I haven't known anyone willing to go to Dallas for a party since college, though.

You won't find big gay neighborhoods (think Montrose in Houston), but there are a couple of gay bars/clubs in both OKC and Tulsa, drag shows at least monthly in both places, etc. And, unless we're driving out of state, we're rarely in a small town anyway.

In small towns when we aren't familiar with the locals, I sometimes feel a bit uneasy, but that might just be me. That's not to say there aren't plenty of problems with homophobia in Oklahoma, but I feel comfortable here in almost all situations. I've never had any issues here as a lesbian, and neither has my gf.
